Long Live Long Island: Historic Cooking of Long Island

Thursday, May 15

6:00—7:30 PM

Merrick Library-Community Room

Step back in time and explore the fascinating evolution of Long Island’s culinary history  in this engaging presentation, exploring the timeline of food on Long Island. Beginning with the era of hunting and gathering, the lecture swiftly moves into the 17th and 18th centuries, focusing on early American colonial life and the art of hearth cooking.

Discover how food was prepared, traded, and enjoyed during this time through authentic cookware, examples of colonial recipes, and even tasty food samples! The discussion will also touch on local historic sites and the impact of trade on regional cuisine.

The journey doesn’t stop there—travel through the Industrial Revolution, the Space Age, and finally, to modern fast food, including McDonald’s. Presented by Diane Schwindt in full colonial attire, this immersive experience will leave you with a new appreciation for how far Long Island’s culinary traditions have come.
