Long Island Philharmonia — Migrations: New and Contemporary World Premieres of Minority and Women Composers
Migrations: New Contemporary Music on the Subject of Human Migration
Featuring World Premieres by Latin American, Black, and Women Composers
Nataliya Medvevovskaya is premiering a work describing her journey and transition from living in Putin’s Russia as a Jew to being an émigré’ based in Brooklyn starting a new life.
Jasmine “Jazzie” Pigott:
“[In my piece] I will be narrating the spoken word. I adapted the two piece concept to a single 5-movement work incorporating the homeland, the middle passage, slavery into the Jim Crow south, Black modern immigration, and the contributions and resilience of Black people in American society.”
Douglas Hoppe: “I am conducting the world premiere of my first symphony. It is a programmatic work starting in a mythical country with problems. Then an arduous journey for migrants up Central America and Mexico to the southern border with night dreaming as they rest. Then a bombastic and sarcastic / humorous scherzo representing law enforcement, illegal and legal border crossings and bureaucratic waiting games. Finally, an optimistic finale with a new life in America.”
